The Ballad of Eddie Howard

-Temple; Stimson

INTRO 0:12

Now, we used to have Dennie, and the preachin' was good,
But it wasn't too theatrical.
So they found Eddie Howard --
Now he's no coward.
His words are like fire on dry wood.
He told a couple stories
To wake the lazy people,
Tore out the pulpit and the steeple,
And everybody wondered, what was Eddie gonna do next?

One bright Sunday morning when the dew was on the ground,
All the song books turned into gold.
Then Eddie started preachin' --
You know that he was reachin',
But you couldn't say his fire had gone cold.
He raved about abortion
And scared the rock-and-rollers.
Collection must've been a million dollars.
And everybody wondered, what was Eddie gonna do next?

Then Eddie bit the head,
Eddie bit the head,
Eddit bit the head off a live bat onstage.
And when we all saw it, we knew that it would be the latest rage.
Then he pounded the pulpit, and he called for revival.
People shouted, "Amen!," and they tossed up their Bibles,
'Cause Eddie bit the head.
And no one remembered the point that he was makin',
But it sure did leave us shakin', brother!
Ninety-five people were baptized in the water that day.
A-men!

Now, way out in San Marcos where the preachin' is good
Sits a longtime Buddy of ours.
When he hears of Eddie Howard,
He'll pick some flowers
And shake his head for twenty-two hours.
He'll tell a couple stories
To wake the lazy people,
Tear out the pulpit and the steeple,
And he'll keep watchin' to see what Eddie's gonna do next.

'Cause Eddie bit the head, (Yes he did!)
Eddie bit the head, (Oh yeah.)
A-men!

Everybody sing A-men!
